Wylee, My Constant Companion

Wylee is a year-and-a-half-old Mini Australian Shepherd, and he is my constant companion. He’s there for the early mornings, the quiet afternoons, the walks, the chores, the thinking, and the pauses. Wherever I am, he is usually close by, watching, waiting, ready.

Like horses, dogs have a way of anchoring us to the present. Wylee doesn’t worry about what comes next or what didn’t work yesterday. He reminds me, daily, that attention, consistency, and kindness matter — and that showing up calmly is often enough.

He has grown up alongside this season of my life, following me as I’ve slowed down, settled into Central Oregon, and begun imagining what staying might really mean. He’s been there as I walk the land, think through dreams, and learn to rest in the idea that not everything has to be figured out all at once.

There’s something deeply comforting about that kind of companionship — the quiet loyalty, the shared routines, the way he simply is. Much like horses, Wylee reflects energy, intention, and emotion back to me. He teaches without words, reminding me to breathe, to soften, and to stay aware of how I move through the world.

In many ways, he’s part of the same lesson horses continue to offer: relationship comes before outcome. Trust grows through time spent together. And partnership isn’t about control — it’s about understanding.

So as I write about horses, dreams, and finding a place to land, it feels important to say this: I don’t walk this path alone. Wylee is part of the landscape of my days, a steady presence in everything I do, and a reminder that companionship — whether with horses, dogs, or people — is one of life’s greatest gifts.

Do you have an animal who walks beside you in your horse life? I’d love to hear about them in the comments.
